Bitling in the Gut |
| Description |
Bitling in the Gut On beyond Butler's Bay lies Caledonia Gut, a deep and beautiful tropical watercourse. In this and the other streams the women bathed, washed clother and enjoyed their daily news. Bitling probably mens beating or battling the clothes over rocks. The term gut came to the British islands with the Hindu coolies who spelled it ghut or ghaut; its usage soon spreah throughout all the islands to indicate any kind of streambed whether overflowing or dry. The laundress on the right has elephantiasis, a mosquito-borne disease once fairly common but now eradicated. |
