Description Preparing to Plant

Before planting sugar cane the ground had to be prepared. The field is divided into 4-foot squares called 'cane holes'. Slaves, both men and women, from the 'big gang' broke the ground with hoes. A gang of 30 slaves working with hoes could hole 2 acres in a day.
